Delayed Discounts: Reward Today’s Purchase on the Next Visit

Ogloba Team 3 min read

What is a delayed discount? A promotion that credits a percentage of today's spend to a card, redeemable only during a defined later window, driving repeat return visits.

Delayed Discounts: Reward Today's Purchase on the Next Visit

Can a discount cost nothing at the point of sale and still change behaviour? A delayed discount does exactly that: the reward is earned today, but redeemable only within a defined future window.

How the Mechanic Works

A customer spending $500 during a December campaign accrues 20% — $100 — as credit on a card that carries no opening value. The customer pays full price in December, so the retailer books full revenue. The $100 becomes live in February, historically a quieter trading month, and lapses if unused. The customer can earn it in one large purchase or several across the promotional period.

Where the Commercial Value Sits

Three effects compound. Full margin is preserved on the original transaction. The credit is redeemable only with the issuing store, and cardholders routinely spend above the credited amount — that excess is revenue the retailer would not otherwise have seen. And the limited validity compresses the return visit into the period the retailer needs to fill. If the credit is never redeemed, the December sale still stands at full price.

Configuration, Not Improvisation

Ogloba implements this using gift cards issued with $0 credit, loading the cash counter with the agreed percentage of qualifying spend and pre-configuring the validity dates before issue. Campaign rules sit in the platform rather than in staff discretion.

The discount is real. Its timing is the strategy.

FAQ

Does the retailer give up margin on the original sale?

No. The customer pays full price during the campaign and the retailer books full revenue; the reward only becomes live later, and if it is never redeemed the original sale still stands at full price.

Must the qualifying spend happen in one transaction?

No. The customer can earn the credit in one large purchase or across several during the promotional period.

Why put the redemption window in a quiet month?

Because the limited validity compresses the return visit into exactly the period the retailer needs to fill — in the worked example, December spend redeemed in February.

How is the campaign set up on the platform?

Cards are issued with $0 credit, the cash counter is loaded with the agreed percentage of qualifying spend, and the validity dates are pre-configured before issue, so the rules sit in the platform rather than in staff discretion.
